I had, for some reason, taken for granted the sturdiness of the Victoria II and forgotten to rearrange my items so they would not vibrate off my desk, but it seems a bottle of ink somehow managed to elude my grasp and tip itself onto the floor, and I could not stop Milk before she padded through the ink and left black prints that now lead under the bed. She won't come out, I'm afraid, but it is better that she's somewhere she deems safe instead of out here. I only hope she will not lap at the ink and fall ill because of it.

From what I can gather, it is chaos outside. It troubles me that they are heading straight for us, and I cannot imagine it will end well for them. And yet... while they are pirates, all I can wish is that they had not engaged in battle with the Victoria II. Perhaps it is foolish to say so, but I pray they have a plan, and that they are not acting on impulse. A loss is a loss, but... that would be a sad way to lose.

I wish both the Victoria and the 4423 godspeed, and that if there be any casualties, they are not fatal.

If she does decide to try the ink, likely it will taste bad enough that she won't be inclined to try more. I shouldn't worry too much about that. She probably feels safest under there, with all of the commotion.

As for the other ship... people will do what people shall. Pirates or no, plan or no.

I pray you are right, Miss Susan.

[a sigh; he sounds distressed] But what is it that people do? Fight one another? Is there no way to settle differences without resorting to violence and bloodshed? How much blood must be spilled before any satisfaction can be guaranteed? ... no matter the question, the answer is nearly always one I do not approve of. If this is considered "human" behavior, I cannot fathom what inhuman behavior must be like.

But I suppose when consorting with pirates, it is difficult to do anything but draw your sword.

It might be difficult I suppose. But if you see this impulse so clearly in yourself, why do you question it when observing a man trained his entire life to loathe and revile the people he is fighting against?

And, yes, this is what people do. Fight each other for whatever reason we may have today. Why else do you think diplomacy is so hard--and so lauded when done properly?

Do not be confused though, Larsa. Blind fighting with no recourse for other options is the realm of the madman.

I question it because I do not accept violence as a means for resolution. Fighting only leads to more fighting, even when it is in the best interest of others. But even if this is so, and people continue to fight, I will strive for diplomacy because it is what I feel is right. Is this not how others feel? That it is what they feel they should do, or are meant to do? As long as blood runs through my veins, I will fight for a peaceful world. Even if the world challenges my views, I will let it be known that a world without violence is something that can be achieved.

I... am not sure it is confusion, so much as... the inability to understand why. Were my brother here, he would say it is because I am young that I do not understand such things. Nevertheless... nevertheless, I will rebel against it. It is all I can do for now.

And he does, even if you believe he is wrong. As I said, he has been trained his whole life to believe that the best solution is a fight, that there are certain people one cannot negotiate with--ironically not seeing himself among them.

You will "fight" for a peaceful world? A curious choice of words there, Mr. Larsa.

Perhaps it is best to understand what one is rebelling against before doing so, don't you think? Otherwiser, really, you're just charging in blindly in another field of battle, though of wills rather than cannons.

...Milk? A puppy, or a cat?

Lord Larsa, if they are true pirates, they will escape unscathed. And from what I have heard of the 4423, they are true pirates.

The crew of the 4423 are a band of notorious pirates who, unfortunately, are quite skilled at avoiding capture. Even a mere whisper of their name is enough to spread fear amongst the masses, which is to be expected, if you recall what happened in Doma all those months ago. They are captained by a young girl not much older than ourselves. I cannot say if they are "true" pirates...

... but I hope that will be the outcome, Mary Weather.

Why is it that you don't share the same views as the rest of the Victoria II? Most of the others just want to catch the 4423 and turn them in-- even when the Victoria II is supposed to be guarding that other ship.

On the contrary, it would be wise to capture and turn the crew in to the authorities -- but I would prefer it to be with as little bloodshed as possible. Too much blood has spoiled the soil of Reial. I do not wish for their death, only incarceration or an escape.

That's a much better option than what most others would like to turn to first.

I'm glad to know that you aren't one of those kinds of people.
